Editing experience

I worked my way up through a variety of reporting and editing roles on consumer technology magazines Stuff and T3 before moving to websites and national newspapers to write about environment issues. Today I mostly write about cleantech, green living and consumer tech. Here’s a list of titles I’ve edited and worked on.

Editor, SmartPlanet
(CBS Interactive, August 2007 – November 2008)

Launched and edited the first ever green consumer site for CBS Interactive (formerly CNET Networks UK). Hired an editorial launch team of three, developed the site concept and executed a successful public launch.  Recruited and commissioned a freelance team of ethical consumer experts including Harriet Meyer, Richard Hammond and other national newspaper contributors.


  • In four months, drove traffic from zero to 400,000 page views per month
  • Recruited a board of editorial advisors including Tony Juniper and Katharine Hamnett
  • Established the brand in the blogosphere and mainstream press including coverage in The Telegraph, The Guardian and Daily Express

Editor, Newconsumer.com
(New Consumer Ltd, November 2006 – August 2007)

Launched a new brand – Newconsumer.com – for ethical lifestyle magazine New Consumer. The site was launched two months after I joined, following a process of briefing three different web design agencies. As well as commissioning web developers using wireframes, CMS requirements and content details, I commissioned news and features from a score of the best ethical consumer journalists in the UK.


  • Press coverage on Sky News, regional radio, Treehugger.com and other blogs. Exposure for Newconsumer.com brand at Sky carbon footprint workshop to 50 national journalists
  • Launch of web video channel, Newconsumer.tv, which was syndicated by Green.tv and broadcast station The Community Channel

Online and managing editor, Stuff Magazine (Haymarket Consumer, October 2004 – October 2006)

I helped raise the profile of this leading technology magazine within industry and the wider media with hundreds of appearances on national radio, television and print: everywhere from the BBC One Breakfast sofa, Sky News and Radio 5Live to The Times, Evening Standard and The Guardian. I also commissioned six supplements for Stuff, restoring editorial credibility and advertising to them. As online editor of Stuff’s website, I managed a team of three and drove a traffic rise in one year from 100,000 page impressions per month to 900,000 per month.


  • Convinced Haymarket to commit to a huge website redevelopment that resulted in Stuff.tv
  • Playing a key role in the magazine becoming the fastest-growing men’s lifestyle in the market, now with an ABC of over 100,000
  • Launched Haymarket’s first ever podcast, the number one technology podcast in the UK in 2006
  • Presented two monthly videos for Stuff.tv, the number one UK technology podcast in 2007

Founder and editor, Hippyshopper.com
(March 2005 – March 2006)
I founded and wrote daily posts for Hippyshopper, the UK and Europe’s first green consumer blog. It attracted a dedicated and vocal readership, built a huge profile in the ethical consumer industry and was recognised for its success by being voted ‘one of the trends, the people, the places of 2005’ in Vogue magazine’s 2005 List.


  • Featured in The Guardian, The Register, Time Out, The Independent and the British Council’s magazine. It was also rated highly by Web User magazine
  • Firmly established in the blogosphere, linked to and featured by majority of the green blogging community

Staff writer and reviews editor, T3 Magazine
(March 2002 – October 2004)
As staff writer I produced news and feature articles to daily deadlines and attended hundreds of press trips, launches and briefings. Working as reviews editor, I built and commissioned a team of a dozen freelancers, created an unrivalled technology and PR contacts’ book, consulted on a T3 TV pilot and helped steer the title from a niche audience to a mass-market one.


  • Short-listed for the PTC’s New Consumer Specialist Journalist of 2003 and Future Publishing’s Journalist of 2003 awards

Entertainment editor, virginstudent.com
(June 2001 – March 2002)
Editing and commissioned daily online articles on theatre, book and gaming articles for a site that – in 2001/2002 – was the UK’s biggest student website. Gained experience of user interaction – photo galleries and forums – and learned Virgin’s CMS, plus essential online Photoshop and hand-coding HTML skills.

Editor, Student Direct
(Jun 2000 – May 2001)
I edited Europe’s biggest student newspaper, managing a team of more than 100 student volunteers, working with external design and advertising agencies and over-seeing every aspect of production.


  • For the first time in five years, the newspaper was nominated for Best Student Newspaper by both The Guardian and The Independent
  • Relaunched Student Direct’s website, adding a heavily-used forum and commenting system
